How can I find/join a backpacking group?

Check out craigslist.com. They usually have lots of personals posts for all types of activities and outings.

What are you afraid of? If you have a friend that should be enough to be safe in case of an accident. Lots of people backpack alone or with one other person, and once you get up there, if you’re the sort of people that make friends easily, you can meet all kinds of folks.
You have the gear, know how to pack and plan for meals, have a trail guide and map, know how to use a compass, know some first aid, know how to avoid bears getting to your food, know how to stay warm, dry, to filter your water, know the rules and regulations of the area you’re visiting, what more is there to know?
